Weekly News #8

SOURCE:BBC WORLD NEWS: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34898931

According to BBC World News 'US scientists have bred a genetically modified (GM) mosquito that can resist malaria infection.' This means if the theory works then the offspring created by GM mosquitos will not be able to pass on the parasite that causes malaria. This could be a huge breakthrough for scientists as around 3.2 billion people (almost half of the worlds population) are at risk from the life threatening disease if untreated, I personally was amazed by this article as it is clear scientific knowledge and technology is advancing as many amazing breakthroughs and procedures are going forward which wouldn't of even been thought of as possible in recent decades. In comparison to this GM mosquito that scientists have created I also saw earlier this week that the first full face transplant had been successful in giving a man who had suffered from severe burns the most 'extensive' facial transplant in history. I found both of these articles fascinating as it is evident that as scientific knowledge and technology improves, only more cures and procedures are being developed and concluding in unbelievable results for people effected by disease or injuries that would of been deemed incurable only a decade a go.

Understanding Audience- Christmas Adverts

Man On The Moon- John Lewis: https://youtu.be/wuz2ILq4UeA
Monty The Penguin-John Lewis: https://youtu.be/iccscUFY860
Holidays Are Coming-Coca Cola: https://youtu.be/-gMjPezr8TY

All three of these advertisements were constructed by both John Lewis and Coca Cola in order to promote their products and make the audience feel like they needed the various products shown in the adverts in order for Christmas to be enjoyable and festive, this was done cleverly in the John Lewis advert as it tried to focus on making the audience feel sympathetic towards the 'Man On The Moon' when really product promotion is the real purpose for all advertisements.

When using the 'Users and Gratification Theory' to analyse these adverts it is clear all three adverts contain either ;family, friendship and compassion causing most of its audience to respond passively as we may feel sympathy for the lonely man on the moon as we know someone elderly who will be alone this Christmas. This sympathetic emotion towards the old man on the moon is felt by members of the audience as the advert is constructed purposely in this way in order for the audience to compare their lives and circumstances with those featured in the advertisement, possibly resulting in people purchasing items from John Lewis just because they felt sorry for the fictional old man they saw on the tele at home. This advert delivered the clear message of loneliness at Christmas as it dramatised how old people may feel on this special occasion usually associated with happiness and family, this strong message also allows people to socially converse around the topic possibly leading to a shopping trip to John Lewis as the advert cleverly displays much of the Christmas range at the shops through out the advert. In comparison to the John Lewis advert the Coca Cola advert also features a young innocent child who is amazed by the Coca Cola truck as it passes them by. The advert includes traditional western style Christmas decorations as everywhere in the street is filled with colourful Christmas lights, this immediately gives off a happy festive feeling as most people viewing the advert take part in this celebration every year. This advert connotes that you need Coca Cola in order for you're Christmas to be as happy as it is for the various families featured in the advert, it implies this joyful festive feeling by filling the advert with as many decorations and objects associated with Christmas as possible, resulting in the audience singing the catchy 'Holidays Are Coming'  tune while buying a crate of bottled Coca Cola in order for their Christmas holidays to be as happy and festive as the families featured in the notorious Coca Cola advert.

Weekly News #7

SOURCE-BBC UK NEWS- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34839800

In the UK BBC news this week i discovered that Islamic State are plotting deadly cyber attacks on the UK, according to Chancellor George Osbourne. If successful the cyber attacks could possibly gain control over the UK's electrical supply, air traffic control and hospitals, this could prove fatal if any of these are successfully targeted in a cyber attack and many lives could be lost. After attacks on Paris last Friday which resulted in 129 innocent civilians being killed we know ISIS are ruthless and not afraid to sacrifice their own lives in order to bring devastation to others. I personally think these threats made by ISIS could cause more extreme devastation if untreated as there may be some Islamicc State Militants capable of such a complicated cyberattack. It has been made evident from previous attacks ISIS do not hesitate to kill innocent people, making them extremely dangerous if capable of damaging such important systems in the UK. I think French President- Francois Hollande was right in declaring war and committing his country to 'destroying' ISIS as it is clear there is no possibility of negotiation, and unfortunately that there is only one motive that they have shown the world, which is to kill everyone who does not share their 'religion' or is not willing to be radicalised and follow them. Unfortunately many vulnerable people in various societies decide to join the so called Islamic State as they may feel like the group gives them a role making them feel important, this ultimately means many people all over the world will join the group as they may possibly believe in the 'religion', or are just bloodthirsty individuals who are committed to go to extreme limits in order to kill innocent people. In Conclusion I think the French President is right in what he said as they are an obvious threat to anyone not following them and that they do need to be 'destroyed', otherwise more travesties, like the one in Paris on Friday will be plotted by ISIS damaging communities all over the globe resulting in pain and sorrow for many innocent people.

Weekly News #6

Source:BBC WORLDS NEWS-  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-34772089

This week i gathered the information that Indonesian death row inmates are possibly to be guarded by crocodiles in the near distance future, even though the article did not possess much information on the subject it did state "You can't bribe Crocodiles". After seeing this article it reminded me of the extreme corruption many countries face all over the world, and  even though Indonesia had come to an almost comical result of using crocodiles as guards, it does clearly show there desperation as dangerous drug dealing related criminals are continuously escaping prison due to bribery happening inside the prison walls. After reading the article i saw a related article below about Indonesia to begin chemical castration for peadophiles, this brang me to realise that  Indonesia were combating crimes like drugs and peadolphillia in a very serious manner as appose to how the UK may deal with these crimes, leaving me unsure if the correct justice is served to many people who commit these crimes in the UK. In conclusion I personally thought the dangerous level of corruption in both countries was displayed by both articles as it shows power and money in many cases is enough to escape punishment, this shows the major injustice people suffer because of governments and organisations, like the prison guards being corrupt allowing dangerous powerful people back into the public and continuing to go through with illegal activities.

Censorship

Censorship can be used in multiple forms in the media in order to try and protect and prevent the vulnerable in society from being provoked or mentally scarred from various explicit content showed on a day to day basis. Many people argue against the use of censorship as it may destroy a message trying to be delivered in a song by replacing particular lyrics with less effective (more suitable) lyrics, I think as well as leaving the audience possibly un sure of the meaning of the song due to half of it missing or being filled in with words which make no sense, this could benefit certain listeners as violent or drug related descriptive lyrics could provoke them for the worse in reality. Censorship is used in the forms;age ratings, watershed, blurring and bleeping to cover up or stop certain people from seeing explicit content which involves drug taking, nudity and other topics that are deemed politically incorrect by our government.

I personally think censorship is key in preventing young and vulnerable people from thinking crime, drugs and domestic violence is the normality, as we know if young people grow up surrounded by t.v programmes which display these harmful, sensitive topics, they may begin to think that type of behaviour is acceptable in todays society. For example in recent times a young 17 year old male stabbed his girlfriend to death and dismembered her body after watching and becoming obsessed with the american tv series Dexter, this is a clear reminder that even though many people would never contemplate this horrific act, content like this where the protagonist is a cold blooded killer can become very influential to vulnerable individuals like this 17 year old leading to horrific acts. Even though i think the watershed is successful is stoping young children seeing content that may scare them, I think if you are like this 17 year old boy and obsessed with gory, horrific entertainment like 'Dexter' age ratings and watersheds are completely helpless as there are many ways illegally he could access and watch the series. This leaves me wondering if possible influential content like 'Dexter' and 'Breaking Bad' should ever be produced as both t.v series connote horrific crimes like murder and mass methamphetamine production to be almost positive, as we see Dexter as the best forensic blood splatter specialist in the USA and Walter White as a extremely talented chemist. Even though the t.v series may also show the consequences each suffer for their actions, I think the vulnerable people in society will be largely effected by this content and even gain inspiration like the 17 year old English boy, however because organisations like Netflix make so much money from t.v series like this, they are not willing to ban these shows purely because of the extremely large amount of money it makes for them, and ultimately this is all they care about, like how gun laws are dealt with in America.

In conclusion I think many methods of censorship are successful for younger audiences being exposed to content that may damage their innocent young minds, but most young people and adults are able to access almost any content through the internet in todays modern society, unfortunately meaning most people will definitely be exposed to content that may scar them mentally at one point in their lives.

Weekly news #5

In this weeks BBC world news IS have been named responsible by Russia as a Russian airbus was brought down holding 217 passengers including 25 children. The Egyptian President claims the area where the airbus was brought down in an area which is under their full control, and James Clapper ( US director of national intelligence) also said "there was no direct evidence of terrorist involvement yet", this possibly suggests that Russia were very quick to jump to conclusions that Islamic State Militants were responsible for this tragic incident, possibly showing their eagerness to become involved in another war. I personally think this incident is likely to trigger a war between Islamic State Militants and Russia as scientists believe the only explanation of the crash was either a bomb or fuel tank explosion. The Egyptian president thinks ISIS are using this as propaganda in order to damage the stability and security of Egypt which is also very possible. Overall this devastating incident shows that ISIS are a massive threat to many countries as if they are not killing to gain power, they will use propaganda in order to damage the security and reputation of countries (like Egypt).
